Drivers Stay Focused With “Head Up Display”

One of the coolest driving innovations to help a driver keep his eyes on the road is the “head up display,” a feature that makes driving safer by projecting key information on the windshield.

Head up display is a transparent image projected onto the vehicle’s windshield with vital information like mph.

The system can display information like miles per hour, cruise control speed and safety features like lane departure warning and forward obstruction warning.

The transparent display provides information to drivers without requiring users to look away from their usual viewpoints. The origin of the name stems from a pilot being able to view information with their head positioned “up” and looking forward, instead of angled down looking at lower instruments.

Head Up Displays Evolved from Aviation

First patented by the Royal Air Force during World War II, the head up display enabled the de Havilland Mosquito to fly faster and easier at night, said Road and Track magazine.

Modified for cars, a head up display projects a transparent image on the vehicle’s windshield showing the kind of information the driver would normally get off the vehicle’s dashboard. The virtual image displayed on the windshield appears to be floating around the front edge of the hood.

The information is displayed in the driver’s line of sight so the driver doesn’t have to look away from the road to find out what he or she needs to know.

Head up display shows traffic patterns, miles per hour and road markings.

Premium marques like Audi and BMW are all offering them. But head up displays are also trickling down into the mainstream. They can also be useful in conditions of bad visibility, like fog, because they’re usually connected to systems that use radar and infra-red sensors, so the driver can tell where the road markings are, according to Autobytel.

Vehicles with built-in head-up displays may have a special film or optics-enhancing plastic on the windshield glass to prevent image distortion or secondary reflection.

Different systems may display different functions. For example, the Lexus system can show radio stations and fuel usage while the Cadillac system and several others project an impossible-to-ignore red warning when the forward collision alert activates.

Used cars brands that include the the head up display include certain Buicks, Chevrolets, numerous BMW models, Ford Shelbys, Toyota Prius, certain Volvos, Mazdas, Jaguars, Maseratis and Mini Coopers, to name a few.

Some car experts  believe the feature will eventually become as standard as Bluetooth.

Head Up Apps are an Alternative to Factory Installation

If your vehicle doesn’t have head up technology, you can always download a free app that does pretty much the same thing at no cost, according to HowtoGeek.com.

The apps work by “brightly displaying a reverse image of your speed (tracked through the phone’s internal GPS) on the windshield when the phone is mounted on top of the dashboard itself,” HowtoGeek.com reports. Your windshield then reflects this image back to you with any information the app collects.

There are also third-party head up displays, which work by linking to either your phone’s internal GPS or finding a signal of their own from a satellite. The device then estimates how fast your car is going at any given time, and displays the information back on the windshield. The information and display are less sophisticated.

Ever Dream of Driving a Race Car?

DavidTuaty

David Tuaty, owner of TLM Racing, teaches car enthusiasts how to become race car drivers.

PALM BEACH GARDENS – When it comes to fast cars and cool rides, driver coach David Tuaty is a dream maker.

“We make race car drivers,” said Tuaty, the owner of TLM Racing and a longtime professional race car driver who runs a race car driver school in Miami. “We have a full time racing team and a racing shop.”

And whether you’re a kid, or an adult who stills FEELS like a kid, Tuaty can teach you to race.

Florida Fine Cars caught up with David at a recent Cars and Coffee Palm Beach auto show at the Palm Beach Outlets Mall to find out more.

Racing School Offers Instruction to Drivers of All Ages and Skill Levels

“I have 14, 15 and 16 year olds who want to be the next superstar,” Tuaty said. “We take them to the track and do regular track days.”FFC Logo New Car

Tuaty’s own racing career began in SCCA Amateur road racing. He went on to win the SCCA Endurance Championship series in 1998. Currently, he has two wins in the Koni Challenge Series along with eight podiums. He also has a win and second place as driver and team owner of SCCA pro Trans Am series.

TLM racing offers everything from BMW and Porsche Racing, driver coaching, race car rental, race car prep and a teen academy.

Would-be race car drivers can rent a track privately or piggyback with a track day for a private organization and share the instructor.

Depending on where the student lives and track availability, students may drive on tracks anywhere from Homestead to Palm Beach, Daytona, Sebring and Fort Lauderdale.

“You call it, arrive and drive,” Tuaty said. “You come with your helmet and you leave with your helmet.”

Racing School Offers Special Instruction and Safety Tips for Teen Drivers

One of the family-friendly offerings at TLM is a teen driving academy held at Homestead Miami Speedway that offers one on one car instruction and classroom sessions and promises to teach proper braking, accident avoidance, car control skills, situational awareness and emergency lanes changes.

TLMTruck

The crew from TLM Racing answered questions about their racing school during a recent Cars and Coffee meet.

The TLM website notes that 16-year-old drivers have a higher crash rate than drivers of any other age. The next teen driving academy is scheduled for July 21, 2108.

The driver coaching program offers professional instructors and features high tech GPS Data technology that provides instant feedback to help drivers correct techniques while driving. Instruction is custom-tailored to each individual driver.

Under the race car rental program, would-be race car drivers receive professional track support and video coaching throughout the weekend. Drivers can race in any of TLM’s winning and proven Porsche GT3 Cup cars or BMWs, including the BMW E46 M3, BMW E46 325i, BMW E36 325i, BMW E30 325i and Honda Civic Si.

TLM also offers race car preparation services, ranging from full maintenance to cage, paint, seats, suspension, software and safety.

Japanese Fire Truck Heats Up Popular Car Show

AtlasFireTruck

Lake Worth resident Jamey Gerardi in his 1987 Nissan Atlas Fire Truck.

The siren wailed so loud passersby covered their ears but when they looked around, the source of the racket was a surprise. Even at a big car show like Cars and Coffee Palm Beach.

FFC Logo New Car“What is that?” asked one incredulous car enthusiast as the boxy-looking truck rolled by.

The 1987 Nissan Atlas fire truck oddity is the proud possession of Lake Worth balloon artist Jamey Gerardi, who let the siren rip as he drove past rows of more traditional eye candy like Lamborghinis, Porsches and BMWs.

“I found it on a website,” Gerardi said grinning. “I thought it would be fun.”

Florida Fine Cars met up with Gerardi to take a closer look.

Quirky Fire Truck Is Curiousity

The vehicle has less than 10,000 miles on it, the engine is situated BENEATH the front passenger seat, and the steering wheel is on the right.

AtlasEngine

Jamey Gerardi lifts the passenger seat to reveal the vehicle’s engine underneath.

The truck has a four-speed manual column shifter, a full back seat, a rear bench seat, a rear storage shelf and an old cast iron bell with a clapper.

Gerardi bought the truck because it had low mileage, air conditioning and was really unusual.

Because the steering wheel is on the right, people are constantly asking him if it’s legal to drive (yes). They also want to know how he got it to the United States (it was shipped).

Gerardi waited about two months for delivery and has been having a blast with his new ride ever since.

“I think it will be a fun extra car. I like the reactions people have to it,” he said. “It’s fun to see people smile and have people check it out. It didn’t cost a lot of money, it’s super rare and no one else has it.”

Gerardi also owns a 1974 Volkswagen Thing and a Japanese market Toyota 4-wheel drive 1987 Master Ace Surf van. He figured the quirky fire truck would fit right in.

“I just like weird cars,” Gerardi confessed.

Revolve: A Luxury Car Membership That Makes It Easy to Drive in Style

asokaveeravagu

Revolve co-owner Asoka Veeravagu stands next to a BMW i8, one of many luxury cars available to Revolve members.

NORTH PALM BEACH – Ever wish you could take a BMW i8 for a spin without coughing up a whopping $150,000 to own this classy ride?

And what if you see a car you like better and wish you’d shopped around more before signing on the dotted line?

The answer is “Revolve,” a luxury automotive subscription service and the brainchild of former GM engineering director Asoka Veeravagu, the company’s co-founder and CEO. The service allows members to drive the luxury car of their dreams for a few months and then switch it out for something else.FFC Logo New Car

Try out a Tesla and if it turns out to be too high tech, swap it out for an Aston Martin, Cadillac, Corvette, Maserati, Mercedes, Audi or Jaguar. Just pick your ride and hit the road.

Florida Fine Cars caught up with the company’s founders at a recent Cars and Coffee car meet to find out more.

How the Idea of a Car Membership Evolved

While at GM, Veeravagu’s employee ID and executive status gave him had access to a warehouse of high-end cars for personal driving. The idea for Revolve was born out of that business experience, he said.

“Why doesn’t this exist for consumers in the real world?” Veeravagu wondered. So he and co-owner Scott Blando made it happen. They opened the business in May 2017 and have been going strong ever since.

Their customers are people who love to drive but may not want to own the same luxury vehicle for three years, Veeravagu said.

“Revolve provides flexibility and variety where it’s never existed in the auto world if you’re a car lover and you appreciate fine cars,” he added.

Don’t expect to find a Volkswagen Beetle or a Mazda M3 at Revolve.

Cars Available Via Revolve Membership Pack a Punch

“All of our cars are what we call ‘Wow’ cars. All are special and all evoke emotion,” Veeravagu said. “The BMW i8 is gorgeous and it looks like a spaceship just landed. But not everyone wants to own it for three years.”

A marketing brochure describes Revolve as a “revolutionary driving experience” and a “frictionless automotive service.”

“With our premium vehicle subscription service, you don’t choose one luxury vehicle, you can drive them all,” the brochure says.

Membership Means Hassle-Free Driving

Vascular surgeon David Feldbaum of Plantation has been a Revolve member since the day it opened and loves it.

He owns several exotic cars but doesn’t like to drive them regularly. He has three young children and he likes large luxury cars for daily use. So joining Revolve made sense.

“The reason why I like this company is it’s hassle free. I basically pay one fee and they deliver the cars to me. They pick it up if it needs any maintenance. They will swap it out for another car. It is really nice to know they will meet me where ever I am,” Feldbaum said. “They also include the insurance so I don’t have to worry about contacting my insurance company every month about changing vehicles.”

Feldbaum also likes the variety of changing vehicles every two months. So far he’s driven an Audi RS7, a Mercedes s550, a Range Rover and a Porsche Panamera.

“I look at these cars as carefree driving of luxury car on a daily basis. I work in it, I take it back and forth to the gym and the grocery store. It’s also a nice car to take the family out to dinner,” Feldbaum said.

How a Revolve Membership Works

  • Joining Revolve requires a $500 membership fee
  • Participation costs $2,300 a month
  • Vehicles can be switched every two to three months
  • Drivers can put up to 2,000 miles per month on a car
  • Insurance is covered
  • Membership can be cancelled at any time

“There’s no commitment,” explained Marketing and Communications manager Melissa Daniels.

“A lot of our members are surgeons, doctors, CEOs or have their own business.”

The most common question, Daniels said, is how much does it cost?

“We explain to them that the car is not for sale. It’s a vehicle membership program,” Daniels said

Revolve’s website describes the membership service as a four-step process:

  1. View the collection and prioritize your favorite vehicles
  2. Car is delivered to your home
  3. Drive it for a few months like it is your own
  4. Return the car to Revolve and get another

4 Simple Ways to Love Your Car in 2017

It’s that time of year when everyone’s vowing self-improvement as they make resolutions to start out the New Year right. But what about your car? Why not kick off the 2017 with a list of all the ways you’re going to take better care of the wheels you rely on to get you around town.

Taking care of your car properly isn’t expensive and it just makes sense.NewFCCLogo

Follow these four simple tips to keep your car running right!

Check the Wheels and Tires

Flat tires are no fun. They’re inconvenient, time-consuming and depending on where you have a blow out they can be downright dangerous. Make it a priority to check the tread on

tireblowout

Checking air pressure regularly can help prevent blow outs.

your tires, examine the sidewalls for cracks and wear and watch for embedded nails or screws. Properly inflated tires are also key to performance. An overinflated tire tends to wear more along the inside of the tread and an under-inflated tire wears more along the edges of the tread. Incorrectly inflated tires can affect cornering, handling and stopping.

“Checking the air is important because tires wear faster with improper inflation,” said Florida Fine Cars service manager Chris G. “You’ll have to replace them much sooner.”

Also, if your steering wheel shakes while driving, it could mean your tires need to be balanced. Get it done or you can wear out the suspension components.

Top Off Fluids and Keep Them Clean

Lift up the hood and take a look! There are five basic fluids you need to keep tabs on to keep things running smoothly:

hoodcar

Make it a practice to routinely check auto fluids.

  • Engine oil (Wipe the dipstick and re-insert for a clean read. It should register in the normal range. If not, add more!)
  • Brake fluid: the fluid level should register between the “low” and “high” marks
  • Coolant: This dumps into an overflow container near the radiator. If it’s below the “minimum” line fill it
  • Power steering fluid: located near the firewall at the windshield’s base. If low, add more
  • Windshield washer fluid: You want clean windows, don’t you? Add more if it’s low!

“Fluids are what keeps the engine alive,” the Florida Fine Cars service manager noted. “Pay attention. If any of the indicator lights go on, get it checked.”

Make It Shine

Filthy cars aren’t fun. Throw out trash, vacuum the floor and seats and clean the windows thoroughly, inside and out. And if you really mean business, get out the wax, roll up your

sleeves and make it shine. As a car ages, the surface gets hazier. Wax will help bring that new car shine back.

“The interior is really the main focus of  your car,” noted Florida Fine Cars’ service manager. Clean up spills and stains quickly so they don’t become permanent. And if you have leather seats, condition them with a quality product every six months to keep the leather supple and extend its life.

Get It Serviced

Preventative care is always best and getting your vehicle serviced is good common sense. Having professionals check out your car on a regular basis can save you money on big repairs that started out as small problems but morphed into monsters because they went unnoticed.

“If you see a ‘check engine’ light go on, get it checked!” Chris advised. “It could be something serious or it could escalate into something serious.”

Brake squeaks are also something to never ignore.

“If you keep driving on worn brakes, you can damage the brake rotors if the brake pads wear down. You could save hundreds of dollars if you get the problem fixed in time,” he added.

Taking care of your vehicle properly will extend its life and making driving in 2017 a dream! Florida Fine Cars operates a AAA Approved Repair Center and a Certified Goodyear Service Center which handles everything from oil changes to 4-wheel alignments and brake services. 3 Reasons Why a Used BMW M5 is the Right Ride!

When it comes to the BMW M5, it’s all about performance, power and style.

And if you love to drive, this sporty sedan is the perfect ride.

NewFCCLogo“It’s a driver’s car. If you like a combination of comfort and power, this car has everything,” said Rafael Espaillat, general manager at Florida Fine Cars in West Palm Beach, where the 2013 model car is available for thousands less than retail. Espaillat owns a 2013 BMW M5 and drives it everywhere he goes.

It’s an amazing car,” Espaillat said. Espaillat loves to drive fast and this sports car fits the bill.

1. BMW M5 Offers Performance and Power

The BMW M5’s 7-speed dual clutch automated manual transmission is part of what makes this car so sweet. This model is also manufactured with a 6-speed manual transmission.

According to Edmunds.com, the “gearbox is a vast improvement over the clunky single-clutch SM setup seen in the outgoing model.” The 2013 model has a twin-turbo 4.4 liter V8 engine. It’s output was increased from 500 to 560 horsepower and its torque has been upped from 383 to 501 pound-feet.

“The end result is a car that launches like a cannon shell out of the hole, yet overall fuel economy is 30 percent better, BMW claims,” said Edmunds.com. The car accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 4.2 seconds with a DCT.

“Power,” Espaillat said, referring to the car’s appeal. “It’s all about power.”

In fact, the car has so much power Espaillat regularly takes his own BMW M5 to Palm Beach International Raceway or Homestead-Miami Speedway to run it on the track.

“The sheer brute force of the 2013 BMW M5’s V8 is enough to leave you shaken and breathless; even so the plant delivers this thunder with grace and sophistication,” Edmunds.com states. “As a result, the sedan is always a pleasant and easy companion, whether driven hard on winding blacktop or at a leisurely clip during mundane city travel.”

2. BMW M5 Looks as Fierce as it Drives

The BMW M5 looks sharp with its larger air intakes, chrome-trimmed vents in the front fenders, rear spoiler and sizeable quad exhaust pipes, Edmunds.com notes.

Other impressive components include:

  • 19-inch alloy wheels
  • 16-way power sport front seats
  • Automatic start/stop function
  • Adaptive suspension dampers

Kelley Blue Book calls the BMW M5 a “perpetual motion machine” that drivers will love if they like an even combination of performance, comfort and practicality.

“BMW’s mid-sized offering is blessed with ‘all-weather’ performance, going tough when the going gets tough,” KBB states.

3. Used BMW M5s Are a Great Investment!

Finding a quality used BMW M5 can be challenging because many of the used models for sale show significant wear and tear. Florida Fine Cars’ BMW M5 models sell quickly because demand for the classy performance models is keen. Florida Fine Cars sells all its used BMW M5 models for thousands below retail.

BMW M5 models are economical to drive and they hold their value. Espaillat has owned several which he has resold for the same or more than he originally paid because their resale value is so strong.
